Bangkok to Celebrate Loi Krathong Festival in November

Bangkok is going to celebrate two festivals one after another in November. While the month begins with a spectacular Royal Barge procession along the Chao Phraya River, it will end with the festival of Loi Krathong, one of the most beautiful Thai festivals dedicated to the goddess of waters.

Both are water-borne festivals and revolve around the culturally significant Chao Phraya River in Bangkok.

Loi Krathong is one of the many Thai festivals that are celebrated in the most colorful manner. Fireworks, lights, beauty pageants, contests, and many other attractions make the festival even more colorful and unique.

The people gather on the bank of the Chao Phraya River and put Krathong on the water to let it float down the river. Krathong refers to the lotus-shaped vessels containing candles, incense and flowers. Loi is a Thai word which simply means 'to float'.

Thus the festival involves floating of Krathong on the waters of rivers, lakes and ponnds everywhere in the country. The main event is organized on the bank of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok where light decorations, float procession and cultural performances create the most spectacular scenery.

The festival begins on November 24 in Bangkok and will continue till 28th of the month. Moreover, the festival will be celebrated at several other places in Thailand also.

Bangsai Arts and Crafts Centre in Ayutthaya, the Phae Gate and Amphur Mae Jo in Chiang Mai, Sukhothai Historical Park in Sukhothai, King Rama II Memorial Park and Wat Chonglom in Samut Songkhram, and Suphanburi River in Suphanburi are other major hubs of festivity.
